Nov 03, 2018 Celestia. The free real time space simulation that lets you see our universe in 3D. Provides detailed model of the solar system and 100,000 stars. Celestia gives access to hundreds of celestial bodies flung in the farthest corners of the universe. The navigation panel takes you to these places in a quick and easy way – so sit back, relax, and calmly check out the cosmos during your trip. Celestia is arguably the greatest program for Mac OS X, at least for science-lovers. However, it's hard to find and install the most recent version. First, Celestia's homepage does not give the most current version of Celestia for Mac OS X - only version 1.3.1 is listed, when in fact version 1.3.2 is already available on their SourceForge files page. Celestia is a free 3D astronomy program for Windows, Mac OS X, and GNU/Linux. Created by Chris Laurel, it is licensed under the GNU General Public License. The program, based on the Hipparcos Catalogue, allows user to display objects ranging in scale from artificial satellites to entire galaxies in three dimensions using OpenGL.

The program, based on the Hipparcos Catalogue, allows user to display objects ranging in scale from artificial satellites to entire galaxies in three dimensions using OpenGL. Unlike most planetarium software, the user is free to travel about the Universe.
NASA and ESA have used Celestia, but it should not be confused with ESA's similar program, Celestia 2000.

Have you ever dreamt of being an astronaut? Or perhaps, you just want to know more about the different planets and galaxies. Celestia, which is free and open-source, lets you explore space in three dimensions. While it is available for multiple platforms, including Windows and Mac, we tested Celestia on a MacBook Pro running OS X Mavericks.
The user interface in Celestia is filled with buttons and options for just about everything, so it definitely comes with a lot of functionality. New users can run the demo to see the earth, the moon and so on. One problem we had in our test was fullscreen mode (press Command+F on Mac), which did not work very well. Fortunately, everything else seemed to work without problems.
We are not astronauts or astronomy experts, but Celestia seems like a fantastic application if you want to study galaxies or planets. Since it is free, we think it is definitely worth a try. Amazing what you can do with computers today, right?
